Product Collaboration: Nau & Snow Peak

This is a gorgeous product collaboration. I love how it ads style to a traditionally non-stylish space (ie backpacking), has multiple uses (ie urban picnics, daily commutes), and is global (chopsticks!) yet refined (good coffee mug for good coffee in the mountains). I'd buy it.

Fun with Numbers

I used to be terrified of numbers - I remember crying in Algebra class my sophomore year in high school - but working in retail and online marketing has taught me to embrace them. Numbers stopped making me sweat years ago -- I actually like them -- but I think words will always more fun than numbers. My cowroker recently challenged this notion when he dressed his numbers in wood vaneer (see below). Now that is fun.
Some things are no fun unless you disguise them in wood vaneer.

A Great Internet Moment

Last night our favorite band streamed a live show from New York via YouTube. We watched it on our giant TV from the couch with wine on Pacific Standard time.

During the show they said out loud, "We love the Internet." Sigh, so do we.

Happy Chinese New Year

Today is Chinese New Year and I was struck by the silence in Timbuk2's factory. Having just read this article and re-launched Timbuk2's manufacturing page, I felt compelled to share the irony of our empty factory with the Timbuk2 community in this post.

A San Francisco "No"

I've ridden by this garage a zillion times, but today I stopped to remember it. Only in this city of love would an emphatic "no" be delivered with such warmth.

Travel: Sabah, Malaysia

Place: Sabah, Malaysia
Time: January 2012

Outrageous markets
And boats in the mist.
Boars on the beach,
Tigers in mugs, and houses on stilts.
Chilis bring tears
And swarms of sea creatures.
Lizards that blend
And roti that dips.
Street art that smiles
And gas canisters with style.
WiFied spirit houses
And pride you can't shake.
THE SKINNY ON THIS SPOT
Where: Malaysia (Sabah)
When to go. Anytime. It's the tropics.
Quote: "Kill the Prime Minister of Malaysia!"
Where to stay. Bunga Raya.
How to get there. Silk or MAL to Kota Kinabalu, 15 minute ferry to Gayana.
What to do. Beach lounging, ocean swimming, great eats, forest walking, boat riding.
Worth eating. Roti prata, beef rendang, nasi goreng kampun, gado gado, mangoes, mangosteens.
Notable. Peaceful, happy people, hot chilis, warm ocean, quiet beaches, wild boar.
Not so notable. Monsoon murkiness, trash on the beach, trash in the water.

Cycling Around the World

I love watching how people ride around the world. The Danes looks immaculate gliding through well engineered, super safe bike lanes. The Chinese carry insane loads and brave crazy road conditions. Singaporeans do not run lights, but they ride on roads without bike lanes; is that a crime?

My good friend Julie Ruvolo is writing in Brazil and recently captured this cyclist in the favela Vila Autódromo. Vibrant, muddy, hot.
